Job summary

Mercy Medical Center is seeking a weekend option Radiology Coding Specialist to support imaging operations on Saturdays and Sundays (7am-7:30pm) with a 24-hour scheduled work week. Responsibilities include assigning ICD codes, ensuring compliant imaging releases, ABN administration, and coordinating with central scheduling and modality areas.

The role requires strong communication, attention to detail, and proficiency with PACS and hospital information systems to ensure accurate medical billing

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; medical secretarial training preferred.
• Experience in medical terminology, anatomy, ICD-9 and CPT coding preferred.
• Proficiency with HIPAA and imaging release guidelines; familiarity with PACS and radiology workflows.

Responsibilities

• Communicate accurate and clinically relevant information to patients, families, and co-workers at hand-offs and other times.
• Assign ICD-10/9 codes following policies and guidelines; validate medical necessity.
• Coordinate scheduling and communications for urgent and emergent imaging exams; liaise between central scheduling and modality areas.
• Obtain authorizations for releasing imaging records in accordance with HIPAA and consent guidelines.
• Operate and navigate PACS, imaging software, Epic, and related hospital systems; support radiology students during training.

Job description

This position is weekend option on Saturday and Sunday with the shift being 7am-7:30pm.

Work Shift: Weekend Option. Scheduled Weekly Hours: 24.

Summary This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing a wide range of services and skills, while focusing on customer service. These tasks include but are not limited to; medical coding through coding systems, ABN, Imaging production, HIPAA, consent to release guidelines, maintaining a high level of written and oral communications, including use of the MARTII for non-English speaking patients.

Job Duties

• Ensures that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed.
• Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
• Assigns ICD-codes based on local medical review policy (LMRP) or National Coverage determination (NCD) guidelines, utilizing medical coding and validation of medical necessity.
• Seeks clarification from provider when imaging order is incomplete or unclear to ensure medical compliancy and accurate medical billing of procedures.
• Administers Advanced Beneficiary Notification as warranted (ABN).
• Performs scheduling notification of emergent and urgent patient exams for diagnostic testing to include coordinating communication between central scheduling and modality areas, prioritizing time sensitive and urgent level data.
• Adheres to consent to release guidelines for imaging records, and HIPAA guidelines by obtaining accurate authorization to release information.
• Demonstrates proficiency with managing electronic images for MMC.
• Proficient with PACS's, Intelerad, OnePACS, hospital wide computer system, CD burning of radiology images, PowerScribe, scheduling, RightFax, Cisco phone and paging systems.
• Participates in the training of Radiology Students to ensure completion of student checklist.
• Process Radiology ROI (release of information) and enters releases in Epic.
• Properly prepares radiology images on to a CD storage device, ensuring the validation of images on device prior to release.
• Validates orders for Imaging Centers and Hospital for same day, next day, and 2 days out.
• Look at future appointments, call office to request orders for appointments, monitor and work off of Appointments without orders report.
• Process orders in Right fax, enter orders in Epic, upload orders from Right Fax into Epic and link orders to proper scheduled exams.
• Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Professional Experience

• One year experience in medical field or secretarial position preferred.
• Experience in medical terminology, anatomy and ICD-9 and CPT coding preferred.
• Knowledge of Medical or diagnostic procedures preferred.
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Education

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Graduate of accredited medical secretarial training program preferred or one year experience in a hospital or medical setting preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration Required

• Basic Cardiac Life Support certification in accordance with American Heart Association.

Physical Requirements

• Sedentary: Exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a minute amount frequently.
