What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for skilled Radiologic Control Technicians (RCTs) to join the Radiation Protection (RP) Division. RCTs support a wide variety of different work activities across a broad range of facilities and have the opportunity to learn new skills and expand their expertise in the identification and understanding of radiological hazards and controls. LANL RCTs implement radiation protection requirements and work independently on challenging projects requiring collaboration with multiple work groups. Assignments can involve activities in varying work environments and weather conditions. Radiological Control Technician 2 ($66,100 - $103,600)

Come join our team as a Radiological Control Technician (RCT) 2 and be part of the Radiation Protection Programs Group within the RP Division. As an RCT‑2, you will operate portable radiation and contamination survey instruments, operate radiological counting instruments, continuous air monitors, perform radiological and contamination surveys, and collect and evaluate radiological air samples. Other responsibilities include labeling radioactive material, assisting in the performance of other RCT programmatic functions as needed, and helping the laboratory maintain a safe environment. You will provide direct support to the field implementation of the RP Program through the execution of radiological job coverage, workplace surveys, and documentation of radiological data.

Responsibilities of an RCT

• Perform radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne monitoring), collect samples for analysis, and generate associated documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Provide support for moderate and high‑hazard radiological work.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Radiological Work Permits (RWP).
• Provide radiological support for the preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials and waste.
• Provide job coverage on tasks involving radiological materials to ensure the safety of employees, the public, and the environment.
• Ensure proper posting of areas and materials, respond to radiological emergencies, and act as subject‑matter expert in radiation protection principles.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

• Knowledge of applied radiation protection principles and implementation practices.
• Experience and/or knowledge of radiological job coverage principles.
• Experience and/or knowledge in radiological event response (CAM alarm, ARM alarm, personnel contamination, etc.).
• Fundamental understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and general science.
• Ability to perform basic algebra and unit conversions.
• Proven adherence to policies and procedures.
• Clear, effective verbal and written communication.
• Ability to wear required PPE (e.g., respiratory protection, safety glasses, anti‑contamination clothing).
• Ability to obtain Laboratory RCT certification and Q clearance.

Education and Years of Experience

Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

• Active DOE "Q" clearance.
• Successful completion of a LANL RP‑PROG approved Radiation Control Training Program with DOE Core Certification.
• Radiological Worker certification.
• Familiarity with LANL policies, practices, and procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF software products.

Essential Job Functions and Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 50 pounds, carry 35 pounds, read, use peripheral vision and depth perception, speak and hear normally (500–3000 Hz), sit, crawl, stand, walk, run, climb, reach overhead, horizontally, and down, use stairways, fixed ladders, and six‑foot ladders, and be physically able to work in demanding environments.

Work Environment & Schedule

Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti‑contamination clothing. This position may require 24/7 coverage, including rotating shifts and weekends. Shift differential pay may be awarded at the manager’s discretion.

Clearance

Position will be cleared to DOE "Q" clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified material. Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
