Job description

What You Will Do

Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) are an essential part of the Laboratory's workforce who help support the execution of a wide range of critical missions. All work at the Laboratory involving radioactive or radiation-generate materials and equipment requires direct involvement of trained and qualified RCTs for safe and compliant operations. RCTs are responsible for monitoring individuals and areas; planning and providing radioactive hazard control during moderate and high‑hazard operations; and responding to off‑normal and emergency events.

Program Overview

This is an Undergraduate Student‑position at LANL. The role competes for placement into a program that reimburses tuition and other educational fees while completing the Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) Radiation Control and Protection Associate degree program. Students are paid for class hours and for hours dedicated to completing the LANL security‑clearance application forms and required training. Upon successful completion and meeting all LANL eligibility requirements, students transition to a full‑time RCT position with a two‑year commitment. Failure to fulfill the commitment results in repayment of tuition and fees. This position also applies for a Q clearance.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Complete the LANL and NNMC application process in its entirety.
• Complete an online LANL application through the LANL website (IRC# to be communicated).
• Upload most recent applicable high‑school or college transcripts (if not already a current NNMC student).
• Maintain a 2.75 GPA from high school or college if an existing student.
• Register at NNMC as a full‑time student (minimum 12 credit hours, up to 18).
• Enroll as a major in Radiation Control and Protection at NNMC.

Training and Certifications

Successful candidates will be expected to complete the Laboratory’s RCT Qualification Program upon hire.

Education and Experience

Complete the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program in 2 consecutive years with a 2.75 GPA as determined by the NNMC academic process.

Essential Job Functions

• Lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.
• Have reading, peripheral, and depth vision.
• Speak clearly and have normal hearing (500 to 3000 Hz).
• Be able to sit, crawl, stand, walk, run, and climb.
• Reach overhead, horizontally, and down.
• Be free from chronic wounds or rashes that would prevent safe entry into controlled areas.
• Use stairways, fixed ladders, and ladders up to six feet.
• Work in demanding environments and wear respiratory protective equipment, safety glasses, and anti‑contamination clothing.

Work Location

On‑site at Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Legal and Compliance

Clearance: Q. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.

Directive 206.2 requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating the employee is suitable. This requirement applies only to U.S. citizens. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
