Position Overview

The Radiology Therapy Technician applies ionizing radiation to patients (including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations) according to the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist, under the general supervision of the Chief Therapist. Responsibilities include educating, preparing, and reassuring patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physicians' advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care. The position also involves participating in patient orientation and education.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire

• Current registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist (RTT) from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or registry eligible.
• Registry eligible new hires must take the certification test within the first 90 days of hire and pass within 6 months.

Requirements for Continued Employment

• Current RTT certification by ARRT with a minimum of 12 hours of documented continuing education annually.

Experience

• Required: None
• Preferred: One (1) year of previous work experience as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.

Education/Training

• Required: Graduate of an AMA-accredited School of Radiation Therapy Technology.

Independent Action

Works with minimal supervision, seeking advice from supervisors, physicians, or physics staff when required.

Additional Requirements

• On-call and extended hours due to patient load.
• Works at any of the VCU Clinics (Massey, HMP, and SPMP). Works evening shift at SPMP.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

• Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs., 50-100 lbs., greater than 100 lbs.
• Activities: Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
• Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.

Emotional Requirements

• Fast-paced environment, steady pace, handling multiple priorities, frequent customer interactions, noisy environment, adaptability to change.
