General Description of the Job Class

Apply ionizing radiation to patients (including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations) according to the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist, under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Deliver the prescribed radiation therapy accurately with minimal supervision.
  2. Verify prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification.
  3. Explain procedures to patients, including communication during treatment and emergency protocols.
  4. Prepare treatment rooms and equipment based on prescription, including immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, and lead protection.
  5. Safely transfer patients to treatment couches, attending to catheters, IVs, etc.
  6. Check daily treatment times and deliver prescribed doses, maintaining communication with patients during treatment.
  7. Maintain patient markings and observe for reactions or events, reporting to nursing staff or the Radiation Oncologist.
  8. Follow radiation safety protocols for patients and staff.
  9. Perform simulations and assist in tumor localization and immobilization procedures.
  10. Assist in dosimetry calculations and obtain weekly port films for review.
  11. Participate in on-call rotation (applicable to Duke staff therapists).
  12. Perform daily QA procedures and maintain treatment records.
  13. Handle mold room duties, secure supplies, and maintain reports and equipment.
  14. Report equipment issues and participate in departmental quality improvement activities.
  15. Assist in hiring and training new personnel, attend departmental meetings, and incorporate policies into patient care.
  16. Qualifications

    Education: Completion of a 24-month radiology or radiation therapy technology course, or a related qualification as specified.

    Experience: At least one year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.

    Licensure and Certification: Current licensure as required, ARRT certification or eligibility, and ongoing continuing education in radiation therapy.

    Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of radiation equipment and procedures, human anatomy, patient positioning, and CPR ability.

    Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform essential physical functions with accommodations if needed.
