Job summary

The Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP) seeks a systemic litigation attorney focused on advancing racial equity for low‑income Michiganders. The role involves identifying, developing, and leading high‑impact civil litigation across MPLP’s priority areas to improve health, safety, and economic security.

Collaboration with MPLP attorneys, legal aid programs, pro bono counsel, law school clinics, and community organizations will be essential to advance a racial justice agenda in poverty-law

Qualifications

  • J.D. is required and admission to the Michigan bar or eligibility.
  • Demonstrated litigation experience and appellate experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice within poverty-law context.
  • Ability to lead in impact litigation and work with diverse client groups.
  • Excellent legal research and writing, and strong oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, and lead systemic litigation and appellate advocacy to improve health, safety, and economic security of low-income Michiganders with a focus on racial equity.
  • Bring affirmative litigation and pursue appeals in state and federal court.
  • Identify and implement strategies to challenge racialized systems and practices.
  • Collaborate with MPLP attorneys, legal aid programs, community organizations, and national advocacy bodies.
  • Organize trainings and create resources for advocates on systemic litigation.
  • Provide legal and technical support to legislators, policymakers, and poverty-law advocates on racial justice issues.
