Job summary

Prairie Meadows in Altoona, IA is hiring a grounds crew member to learn and perform daily racetrack maintenance and paddock care. You will cross-train on the main track, training track, horse paths, and paddock areas to support racing and training operations.

Operate tractors and other equipment, inspect for safety, and perform physical tasks outdoors in all weather. You will lift up to 75 pounds and work around horses while keeping facilities in top condition.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
• Ability to use rakes, shovels, and a four-wheeler.
• Ability to operate skid loaders.
• Must be able to operate various types of equipment safely and cautiously.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with people of diverse backgrounds.
• Outdoors environment in all types of weather.
• Works with heavy track equipment and around horses.
• Ability to stand or walk for an eight-hour shift, bend, and lift 75 pounds.
• May have exposure to chemicals.

Responsibilities

• Cross train to learn all aspects of preparing the main track, training track, horse paths, and paddock areas daily.
• Learn to operate all equipment to maintain the racetrack, and when to use them depending on the weather (i.e. tractors, floats, box harrows, double gangs, water truck, horse ambulance and conditioners etc).
• Keep all equipment clean, well maintained and set correctly.
• Inspect, watch, and listen to equipment to make sure it is working properly. Report all problems with equipment to supervisor immediately.
• Keep track, horse path, and paddock in good condition. This includes shoveling the board on the inside rail, outside fence, washouts, drains in the infields, and any other labor work as needed.
