Job summary

Trans-Tech in Adamstown, MD, seeks a PhD-qualified ceramic materials engineer to lead R&D, develop new ceramic formulations, and guide laboratory synthesis from development to production.

The role involves collaborating with Sales and Quality to ensure performance, meeting customer needs, and contributing to manufacturing KPIs. Travel is required as needed.

Qualifications

• PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or other related Engineering disciplines.
• Experience in Ceramic R&D, Process or Manufacturing.

Responsibilities

• Developing new material formulations and processes using crystal chemistry knowledge and directing laboratory synthesis and ramp-up to production of new ceramic material.
• Develop new or enhanced ceramic processes related to ceramic powder synthesis, forming, sintering, and post-foundry operations to meet form, fit and function for customers.
• Interface with customers to understand material requirements and invent formulations to solve problems.
• Define and/or recommend processing or equipment requirements and review techniques used in manufacture and evaluation of ceramic products.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing to support KPIs and ensure yields and material performance.

Job Responsibilities

• Developing new material formulations and processes using a knowledge of crystal chemistry, phase equilibria and ceramic science and directing the laboratory synthesis and ramp-up to production of new ceramic material
• Develop new or enhanced ceramic processes related to specific areas of manufacturing such as ceramic powder synthesis and powder processing, ceramic body forming, ceramic sintering, and post foundry production operations to provide products that meet form, fit and function for our customers.
• Have, or quickly develop, a market understanding sufficient to understand the material requirements of specific customers and to use this understanding to invent new formulations to solve key problems for specific customers or general markets.
• Visit in person and interface directly with customers to provide solutions to their most difficult material and device design and performance challenges.
• Will define and/or recommend processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and review processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of ceramic products.
• May be involved in any part of the manufacturing cycle or development of product.
• Will coordinate the design requirements and collaborate with Sales and Quality to ensure processing and production capabilities.
• Compile and evaluate material characteristics and electrical test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts, equipment technology, tooling and tooling design, kiln and firing techniques and associated refractory materials.
• Implement improvements, make process changes through established change controls, and ensure the processes meet required yields and material performance requirements.
• Will collaborate with the Manufacturing teams to support required KPIs, goals and objectives and make problem solving a priority to support Manufacturing.
• Travel as required.

Qualifications

• PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or other related Engineering disciplines
• The ideal candidate will have Ceramic R&D, Process or Manufacturing experience
• Core engineering principles; detail oriented and metrics driven
• Team player with strong process understanding and process improvement capabilities
• Must be a U.S. person.
