Job summary

Trans-Tech, a leading designer and manufacturer of RF and microwave components, is seeking a PhD-level materials engineer to drive ceramic materials development, guide lab synthesis, and scale production across multiple product lines in Adamstown, MD. The role includes technical mentorship, applications engineering, and representing the company at conferences.

The ideal candidate will have Ceramic R&D, Process or Manufacturing experience, strong engineering principles, and be a U.S. person.

Responsibilities

  • Inventing and synthesizing new materials and process development ideas aligned with technology roadmaps and megatrends, directing laboratory synthesis and ramp-up to production of new ceramic materials for multiple product lines.
  • Teach and mentor technical staff throughout Trans-Tech and affiliated companies.
  • Serve in an applications engineering/technical sales role as the expert in materials and product technologies.
  • Represent the company at technical conferences and trade events as a speaker and resource to attract and retain customers.
  • Lead technical teams in materials and product development.

We supply advanced materials, ferrites and magnetic materials, dielectric, ceramic bandpass filters, coaxial resonators, and coaxial inductors.

Key responsibilities in this role include, but are not limited to; inventing and synthesizing new materials and process development ideas aligned with technology roadmaps and megatrends, using a knowledge of crystal chemistry, phase equilibria and ceramic science and directing the laboratory synthesis and ramp-up to production of new ceramic materials for multiple product lines, teaching and mentoring of the technical staff throughout Trans-Tech and affiliated companies, functioning in an applications engineering/technical sales role as the recognized expert in our materials and product technologies, representing the company at various technical conferences/ trade events as a speaker and resource to attract and retain customers, and leading the technical teams in materials and product development.

Job Responsibilities

  • Developing new material formulations and processes using a knowledge of crystal chemistry, phase equilibria and ceramic science and directing the laboratory synthesis and ramp-up to production of new ceramic material
  • Develop new or enhanced ceramic processes related to specific areas of manufacturing such as ceramic powder synthesis and powder processing, ceramic body forming, ceramic sintering, and post foundry production operations to provide products that meet form, fit and function for our customers.
  • Have, or quickly develop, a market understanding sufficient to understand the material requirements of specific customers and to use this understanding to invent new formulations to solve key problems for specific customers or general markets.
  • Visit in person and interface directly with customers to provide solutions to their most difficult material and device design and performance challenges.
  • Will define and/or recommend processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and review processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of ceramic products.
  • May be involved in any part of the manufacturing cycle or development of product.
  • Will coordinate the design requirements and collaborate with Sales and Quality to ensure processing and production capabilities.
  • Compile and evaluate material characteristics and electrical test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts, equipment technology, tooling and tooling design, kiln and firing techniques and associated refractory materials.
  • Implement improvements, make process changes through established change controls, and ensure the processes meet required yields and material performance requirements.
  • Will collaborate with the Manufacturing teams to support required KPIs, goals and objectives and make problem solving a priority to support Manufacturing.
  • Travel as required.
