Job summary

Benshaw, a leader in motor controls and drives, seeks an R&D Manager to lead a multidisciplinary engineering team from concept through production. You will own the technical roadmap for LV/MV soft starters and drives, guide architecture decisions, and ensure on-time delivery of robust products.

Ideal candidates have 10+ years in power electronics, strong leadership, and hands-on design experience with drives and controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
• 10+ years of experience developing power electronics or motor control products, including 5+ years leading engineers or projects.
• Hands-on design experience with variable frequency drives, soft starters, or similar power conversion equipment.
• Strong understanding of power semiconductor devices (IGBTs, SCRs), gate drive design, magnetics, thermal management, and protection.
• Working knowledge of motor control methods, including V/Hz, vector control, and motor protection functions.
• Experience taking products through UL, CSA, and IEC certification.
• Demonstrated success delivering products to production on schedule using a structured development process.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, executives, and customers.

Responsibilities

• Own multi-year technology roadmap for LV and MV soft starters and drives.
• Guide architecture decisions for power topologies, semiconductors, cooling, and control platforms.
• Evaluate technologies such as SiC devices, embedded connectivity, and cybersecurity.
• Lead, hire, and develop a multidisciplinary team of engineers.
• Establish goals, conduct performance reviews, and build a talent pipeline including co-ops and interns.
• Balance resources across new development, sustaining engineering, and custom orders.
• Participate in stage-gate development from concept to production release.
• Manage schedules, budgets, risks, and report to leadership.
• Oversee design reviews, DFMEA, design for manufacturability, and full-power testing.
