Innovate to solve the world's most important challenges. Honeywell UOP is seeking to fill a position in the R&D Materials Characterization group at their site in Des Plaines, Illinois. Honeywell UOP R&D Materials Characterization in Des Plaines is a corporate center of excellence (CoE) supporting Honeywell UOP, Specialty Materials, and corporate needs for chemical and materials analysis.

Position Overview

The R&D Analytical Scientist will work within a team of scientists utilizing instrumentation to provide compositional, elemental, and other property measurements (including Bromine Index, Bromine Number, Karl Fischer, Chloride, Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, Research Octane, Motor Octane, and Derived Cetane) to support materials analysis needs.

Candidate Requirements
  • Basic understanding of inorganic and organic chemistry with prior experience in chemical analysis.
  • Familiarity with reaction mechanisms, classical and instrumental organic functional group analysis is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a Research and Development environment is desirable.
  • BS degree or higher in Chemistry or equivalent Analytical Laboratory work experience.
Key Skills and Qualities
  • Effective communication skills - oral and written.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment on multiple projects.
  • Experience with chromatography, distillation, organic physical analysis, octane, and derived cetane analysis preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with laboratory data systems such as LIMS, Chromeleon, Chemstation/OpenLab.
  • Responsibility for creating purchase requisitions and maintaining laboratory supplies (Kanban system).
  • Asset management of instrumentation, including calibrations and repairs.
