Job summary

IonQ, Inc. seeks a Staff Scientist in Quantum Algorithms and Applications to advance quantum algorithm design for condensed matter and high energy physics problems.

You will work with IonQ’s trapped-ion systems, bridging classical simulation and quantum methods while shaping fault-tolerant approaches for future hardware. You will lead projects, implement novel algorithms and error mitigation techniques, and collaborate with compiler/QEC teams to quantify resources and performance.

Qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field with postdoc or industry experience.
• Experience implementing quantum algorithms on near-term hardware with error mitigation.
• Experience applying quantum algorithms to condensed matter or high energy physics problems.
• Deep expertise in condensed matter or high energy physics areas.
• Experience with classical simulation methods and HPC workloads; proficiency in Python and C++.

Responsibilities

• Lead condensed matter and high energy physics application projects, working independently against goals.
• Design and implement novel quantum algorithms, error mitigation and error detection methods (QED).
• Perform codesign and resource estimation of fault-tolerant quantum algorithms with compiler and QEC teams.
• Combine classical simulation/HPC with quantum methods in end-to-end workflows for mapping physics problems to quantum formulations.
• Collaborate with fault-tolerant researchers and with chemistry/software teams; contribute to publications.
