Job summary

IonQ, Inc. is seeking a Staff Scientist, Quantum Algorithms and Applications to join the Computational Sciences team.

This newly formed group tackles condensed matter and high energy physics problems via quantum computation on trapped‑ion systems, bridging classical simulation and fault‑tolerant quantum methods. You will influence problem selection, develop fault‑tolerant algorithms, and collaborate across teams to publish results and advance quantum applications.

Qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field with postdoc or industry experience.
• Deep expertise in condensed matter or high energy physics.
• Experience applying quantum algorithms to scientific problems and fault‑tolerant methods.

Responsibilities

• Lead condensed matter and high energy physics application projects with independent goals.
• Connect physics problems to quantum computation and map to fault‑tolerant formulations.
• Combine classical simulation and HPC workloads with quantum methods in end‑to‑end workflows.
• Compare computed results against experimental data, e.g. neutron scattering observables.
• Collaborate with fault‑tolerant researchers and quantum chemistry and software teams; contribute to publications.
