Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Quality Manager (CWI) is responsible for ensuring all welding activities and fabricated components meet applicable codes, standards, and customer specifications. This role involves performing visual inspections and dimensional checks while maintaining detailed inspection records and supporting continuous improvement in welding quality and safety.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise quality and ABS leads and assigned quality personnel.
  • Set clear expectations and hold employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and performance.
  • Coach, train, and evaluate employees; assist with hiring, development, and disciplinary action.
  • Build a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
DOCUMENTATION & COMPLIANCE
  • Maintain and control all quality management system records, including policies and procedures, work instructions, forms, inspection records, training records, supplier/vendor evaluations, corrective actions, audit records, and certification documentation.
  • Ensure records remain current, accurate, and compliant with company, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Must maintain all applicable company accreditations and quality certifications, ensure successful preparation for, participation in, and compliance with all associated internal, customer, regulatory, and third-party audits.
  • Verify welder qualifications and ensure welding personnel are certified per applicable codes.
  • Review and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and fabrication drawings.
  • Ensure adherence to all welding codes, industry standards, and company quality procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Production
  • Adjust staffing and shift resources between areas as workload requires.
  • Work closely with welders, fitters, and supervisors to resolve welding quality opportunities.
  • Recommend corrective actions and improvements to welding processes.
  • Assist in training and mentoring welding personnel on quality standards and best practices.
  • Work with outsourced contractors to produce our projects with the same quality standards.
Performance and Cost
  • Track NCRs, Warranty, and Lost Time; report results to management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve shop processes and machinery to improve quality.
Safety and Quality
  • Enforce safety policies and EH&S requirements and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Partner with Safety on concerns, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure customer specifications are met and address defects, rework, and scrap.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative actions.
Leadership
  • Communicate goals, priorities, and schedule changes to supervisors and employees.
  • Coach supervisors and leads on leadership, accountability, and problem resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and facility standards; perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Effective collaboration with Production, Detailing, Engineering, Safety, and other departments as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and production or business software.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and professional representation of Alliance Steel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three or more years in steel manufacturing, metal fabrication, or similar industrial manufacturing.
  • Supervisory experience in manufacturing, including accountability for schedules, labor, materials, quality, and performance.
  • Current AWS Certified Welder (CWI) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes GMAW, SAW.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation skills, and communications skills.
  • Experience with AWS, or other industry-specific code.
Preferred
  • Degree in Manufacturing, Operations Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience with steel sheets, trim, components, or similar fabricated materials.
  • Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or other continuous improvement experience.
  • Experience with production planning, inventory, and preventative maintenance programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to heat, noise, and metal fumes.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and climb ladders or platforms for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
