Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs in Burns Harbor, IN is seeking a Quality Engineering Intern to support the Metallurgical Lab and related testing activities. Working alongside industry-leading engineers, you will help implement safety practices, optimize lab workflows, and contribute to real-world steelmaking projects while building lifelong professional connections.

The role requires enrollment in a BS program in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or a related technical field, with at least sophomore

Qualifications

• Enrollment in BS program in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or related technical degree.
• Completion of at least sophomore year by summer 2027.
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

• Complete monthly safety inspections and safety observations for the Metallurgical Department.
• Work safely and assure plant safety policies are followed.
• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.
• Manage test equipment calibrations.
• Create new operating efficiencies to maintain the production, testing, and shipping of steel with a leaner workforce.
• Maintain Steelmaking spectrometer lab, calibration, and on-call support.
• Responsible for data-mining investigations with metallurgical grade performance, chemistry, scrap charges, etc.
• Responsible for Metallurgical grade maintenance and development.
• Manage 3rd party testing inspection.
• Maintain tracking of Steelmaking scrap, referral, and diversions.
• Responsible for Metallurgical investigations.

As a Quality Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in the field of Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or other related technical degree
• Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027
