Job summary

SMS group is seeking a Quality Engineer in Valparaiso, IN to lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advising process for heavy blast furnace equipment. You will assess worn components, identify failure mechanisms, and develop refurbishment strategies while ensuring compliance with engineering specs and customer requirements.

Responsibilities include cost estimates, supplier collaboration, and final quality documentation. Occasional travel within North America is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
• Experience with dimensional inspections and failure analysis
• Ability to read engineering drawings and BOMs
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Willingness to travel within North America

Responsibilities

• Lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advise (DIA) process for refurbishment.
• Evaluate component condition and determine repair/refurbishment/replacement methods.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports and refurbishment recommendations.
• Develop scopes of work and support project managers with repair cost estimates.
• Interpret drawings, specifications, BOMs, and customer documentation.
• Verify repairs comply with drawings, quality plans, and standards.
• Perform root cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Coordinate with production, engineering, purchasing, and suppliers.
• Prepare NCRs and final quality documentation.
• Conduct final inspections prior to shipment.
• Support continuous improvement for quality and efficiency.
