Job summary

SMS group in Valparaiso, IN, is seeking a Quality Engineer to lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advise (DIA) process for heavy blast furnace equipment. You will evaluate worn components, perform failure analysis, and develop refurbishment recommendations that meet engineering specs and customer requirements.

The role combines hands-on testing, technical reporting, cost estimation, and supplier collaboration, with occasional travel to North American supplier facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
• Experience in mechanical inspection, failure analysis, and root cause investigations.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and BOMs.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advise (DIA) process for heavy blast furnace equipment.
• Evaluate component condition and determine repair/refurbishment/replacement methods.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports and refurbishment recommendations.
• Develop technical scopes of work and support project managers with repair cost estimates.
• Coordinate with production, engineering, purchasing, and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
• Perform and document final inspections of refurbished equipment before shipment.
• Support continuous improvement to enhance quality and workshop efficiency.
