Job summary

SMS group is seeking a Quality Engineer to lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advise (DIA) process for heavy blast furnace equipment in our Valparaiso workshop. You will evaluate worn components, identify failure mechanisms, and develop refurbishment recommendations while ensuring conformance to engineering specs, customer requirements, and quality standards.

Responsibilities include preparing inspection reports, cost estimates, and technical scopes of work; interpreting drawings and BOMs; and

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
• Experience with dimensional inspections, failure analysis, and root cause investigations.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and manufacturing documentation.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Disassemble, Inspect, and Advise (DIA) process including teardown, inspection, and failure analysis.
• Evaluate component condition and determine repair, refurbishment, or replacement methods based on engineering principles and customer specifications.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports, technical assessments, and refurbishment recommendations.
• Develop technical scopes of work and support Project Managers by preparing accurate repair cost estimates.
• Interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, and customer documentation.
• Verify repairs and refurbishment activities comply with drawings, quality plans, and industry standards.
• Perform root cause investigations to identify recurring issues and recommend corrective actions.
• Coordinate with production, engineering, purchasing, and suppliers to resolve technical and quality-related issues.
• Conduct supplier visits to inspect work, perform quality audits, and support problem resolution.
• Prepare NCRs, corrective action reports, and final quality documentation.
• Perform and document final inspections of refurbished equipment prior to shipment.
• Support continuous improvement to enhance quality, reliability, and workshop efficiency.
