Job summary

Mortenson is seeking a Quality Engineer II for the Structured Cabling group. The role involves coaching project teams on Mortenson’s Quality system, managing quality performance, and recommending improvements.

The position requires 100% travel (3–4 weeks on site, ~1 week at home) with location TBD. Responsibilities include leading Quality kick-offs, training modules, developing Quality Plans with PMs and field teams, and ensuring NCRs, RFIs, and submittals comply with contract documents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (CM/CE/EE/ME/IE) or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years in design, engineering, construction or telecommunications.
  • Knowledge of quality systems (e.g., Baldrige, ISO 9000, Lean, Kaizen, TQM).
  • Understanding of EPC (Engineer-Procure-Construct) processes.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Job description

Quality Engineer II – Structured Cabling

Summary

Mortenson is looking for a Quality Engineer II in our Structured Cabling group to assist and coach project teams in the execution of Mortenson’s Quality system and to execute operating group level Quality initiatives. This involves managing, monitoring, reporting, and analyzing project and operating group quality performance, and making recommendations for improvement.

Location: TBD – location and project will be assigned. This role requires 100% travel on a rotational basis (on average 3–4 weeks on a project site, about 1 week at home; schedule is project-dependent).

Responsibilities

  • Foster strong teamwork orientation, promote diversity, and build cross-cultural relationships, resolving conflicts appropriately
  • Study and interpret plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and risks
  • Serve as a technical resource and guide project team members who are incorporating Mortenson’s Quality system and Three-phase Planning process
  • Lead project Quality kick-offs and lead/execute instructor-led training modules in Quality
  • Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, Project and Field Engineers to develop and implement project Quality Plans, DFW logs, Standardized Work Plans, Turnover and Project Close-out requirements
  • Train and coach project teams to implement the Project Quality Plan from notice to proceed through final acceptance, understand quality requirements, and ensure compliance with contract documents
  • Ensure project teams utilize accepted standards and processes to manage Non-Conformance Records (NCRs), the Request for Information (RFI) process, and submittals process
  • Partner with project teams to capture and share lessons learned and best practices to identify opportunities to minimize risk and improve project execution
  • Support operating group-wide Quality initiatives
  • Demonstrate leadership consistent with Mortenson values

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience; or Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar role within design, engineering, construction, or telecommunications
  • Basic knowledge of quality systems (e.g., Malcolm Baldridge, ISO 9000, Lean, Kaizen, TQM, continuous improvement, value streams)
  • Understanding of Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) processes
  • Self-starter, independent worker, computer literate
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong teamwork orientation
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to travel 100%

Preferred Skills

  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of structured cabling components, cabinets, pathway systems, and related low voltage and fiber optic cabling and testing (e.g., OTDR, VFL)
  • Experience/knowledge of International Building Code (IBC), BICSI ICT standards, applicable ANSI code requirements, and/or IEEE ICT code requirements

Compensation

The base compensation range for this role is $89,500 – 120,800. Actual range may vary by location and is influenced by knowledge, skill, and experience. Location-based adjustments may apply (Denver, CO; Chicago, IL; Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; Washington, D.C.).
