Job summary

Tesla seeks a Quality Engineer for the Cell Engineering team to ensure battery cells meet top quality and reliability standards from concept to production. You will collaborate with Design, Manufacturing, Controls, Production, and Supply Chain to maintain high performance and manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in quality engineering or related field with track record of leading QA efforts.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, ISO/TS or IATF 16949, APQP, and PPAP.
  • Structured problem‑solving training (8D, DMAIC, 5Why, Ishikawa, MSA, DoE).
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills using tools such as Tableau, SQL, JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, or R.
  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production; introducing new equipment and processes.
  • Experience with measurement and inspection techniques; automotive or high‑volume manufacturing a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure production lines design and operation meet high quality standards.
  • Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques to drive continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution using 8D and other structured tools.
  • Track quality performance metrics, prioritize issues, and drive improvement with cross‑functional teams.
  • Lead FMEA activities to identify risks and mitigate design/manufacturing issues.
  • Coordinate PCA for product, process, equipment changes to improve manufacturability.
  • Develop control plans, inspection standards, testing plans, and manufacturing validation plans.

Job description

Tesla is seeking a Quality Engineer within our Cell Engineering team to ensure products meet the highest standards of product quality and reliability. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully transitioning new product designs from concept into production while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency. The battery cell is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla’s world-class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product.

  • Work collaboratively with Product Design, Equipment Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Controls, Production, Maintenance, Controls, and other cross functional teams as the cell quality expert to ensure production lines are designed and operated to produce high quality and performance cells
  • Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques to drive continuous improvement to manufacturing processes
  • Lead identification, root cause analysis, and resolution using 8D methodology and other structured problem‑solving tools to resolve manufacturing quality issues
  • Track quality performance metrics, prioritize top issues, and drive continuous improvement activities with cross‑functional team
  • Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks are mitigated
  • Collaborate cross functionally and with NPI to initiate and implement product, process, equipment, and other relevant changes to improve manufacturability and field performance via Process Change Approval (PCA)
  • Drive cross‑functional projects with manufacturing, supply chain, production quality, and research teams to test existing and determine new product specifications and tolerances
  • Develop product/process control plans, inspection standards, testing plans and instructions, work instructions and manufacturing validation plans to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability
  • Manage non‑conforming cell process flows via containments and evaluate suspect materials while working closely with internal and external teams to identify disposition and resolve root causes
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in quality engineering or a related field, with a proven track record of success in leading quality assurance efforts
  • Experience in ISO 9001, ISO/TS or IATF 16949, APQP, and PPAP
  • Specific training and demonstrated success in applying structured problem‑solving tools (8D, DMAIC, 5Why, Fishbone (Ishikawa) Diagram, Measurement System Analysis, Process Capability Analysis, DoE, etc.)
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills using tools such as Tableau, SQL, JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, R, or similar
  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Experience with broad variety of measurement and inspection techniques
  • Experience in automotive or high‑volume manufacturing is highly desired
