We're looking for a hands-on Quality Engineer to support a lab environment. This role will focus on testing embedded firmware on real hardware, troubleshooting failures, reproducing field issues, and building automation to improve test coverage and release efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Test firmware on physical hardware by flashing devices, executing test plans, and documenting what passed, what failed, and why.
- Perform failure and edge-case testing by interrupting power, disrupting connectivity, stressing communication interfaces, and evaluating how firmware responds under real-world conditions.
- Reproduce field-reported failures in a lab environment, capture logs and diagnostic information, and create detailed bug reports for firmware engineering teams.
- Convert recurring manual tests into Python-based automated tests that can run as part of a CI/CD pipeline.
- Build, configure, and maintain test environments, including devices, power controls, serial/debug connections, and supporting host systems.
- Develop a strong understanding of technologies such as GPS, cellular, Bluetooth/BLE, Wi-Fi, and CAN to efficiently distinguish firmware issues from hardware or test-environment problems.
- Maintain accurate test plans, coverage documentation, and test results to provide visibility into product quality and outstanding areas of validation.
- Collaborate closely with firmware, hardware, and test engineering teams to improve testing processes and overall product reliability.
Qualifications:
- 1+ year of combined professional, internship, co-op, or hands-on project experience involving hardware testing, firmware, or embedded systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- Basic Python programming skills and comfort working from the Linux command line.
- Hands-on hardware experience, including working with multimeters, USB connections, and serial interfaces.
Plusses:
- Exposure to embedded firmware, RTOS environments such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS, or BLE/wireless protocols.
- Hands-on experience with soldering, JTAG, logic analyzers, or oscilloscopes.
- Experience writing clear, detailed, and actionable bug reports.
- Interest in using AI tools to improve or accelerate test development.
