Job summary

Orion Castings is seeking a Quality Engineer for the North Billerica, MA facility to oversee QA activities during product launches and lifetime cycles. You will work with production teams and customers to ensure adherence to technical and regulatory specifications, leading continuous improvement initiatives across all manufacturing lines.

The role requires a 5+ year background in manufacturing quality, strong analytical skills, and proficiency with MS Office and Minitab.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years quality engineering in manufacturing, preferably machining or metal casting.
  • Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and attention to regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • QMS compliance: ensure the Quality Management System conforms to customer, internal, AS9100/ISO 9001, and regulatory requirements.
  • Standards & procedures: establish and monitor procedures for quality across manufacturing lines.
  • Product launches (APQP & PPAP): oversee APQP activity and document Process Flow, PFMEA, and Control Plans; submit PPAPs.
  • Customer liaison: act as primary technical liaison with customers and manage corrective actions.
  • Continuous improvement: lead quality improvements using data, control charts, and experimental design.
  • Work instructions & training: oversee QC work instructions and train value stream personnel in statistics.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: participate in production meetings to identify quality improvements.
  • Team development: drive growth and provide training within the quality department.

Direct the activities of the AS/ISO Administrator to maintain system integrity.* **Standards & Procedures:** Establish, monitor, and evaluate procedures for maintaining high standards of quality, reliability, and safety across all manufacturing lines.* **Product Launches (APQP & PPAP):** Oversee APQP activity at the plant level regarding the development and documentation of Process Flow, PFMEA, and Control Plans. Prepare and submit customer PPAPs.* **Customer Liaison:** Act as the primary technical liaison with external parties on matters relating to quality, including managing timely responses to customer corrective action requests (RMA) and returned products.* **Continuous Improvement:** Organize, promote, and lead companywide quality improvement efforts using data collection, control charting, dimensional inspection, and experimental design techniques.* **Work Instructions & Training:** Oversee the preparation, implementation, and maintenance of Quality Control work instructions, and lead the training of value stream personnel in statistical methods.* **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Actively participate in production meetings with the sales, engineering, programming, and manufacturing teams to identify areas for quality improvement.* **Team Development:** Drive growth, track performance, and provide training resources within the quality department to support succession planning and internal career pathing.**Qualifications & Skills*** **Education:** Bachelor’s degree required in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical discipline.* **Experience:** Minimum of 5 years of related quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally involving machining or metal casting.* **Problem Solving:** Strong analytical ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions from extensive mathematical or diagram-based technical instructions.* **Communication:** Advanced written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively interact with, influence, and build trust across all levels of the organization—from floor production associates to corporate senior leadership.* **Software Proficiency:** Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Minitab statistical analysis software.**Position Notes & Technical Requirements*** **Location & Relocation:** This position is based on-site at our North Billerica, MA facility.
