Quality Control Technician – Asphalt

QUALITY CONTROL TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform engineering tests on hot mix asphalt in a laboratory setting.
• Perform engineering tests on aggregate and recycled asphalt pavement in a laboratory setting.
• Maintain laboratory test equipment.
• Extract core samples from pavement for testing.
• Prepare and maintain reports on test results.
• Communicate with and develop a working relationship with the asphalt plant operators and TDOT officials to help produce quality hot mix asphalt.
• Assist with the design of TDOT-approved job mix formulas for hot mix asphalt.
• Assist in preparing quality control plans.

QUALITY CONTROL TECHNICIAN REQUIREMENTS

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Math (primarily arithmetic and algebra).
• Physical sciences.
• Microsoft Excel.
• Hands‑on laboratory testing.
• Critical thinking and problem solving.

QUALITY CONTROL TECHNICIAN PREFERRED SKILLS

• Associate degree or higher in the engineering or construction field.
• Hot Mix Asphalt Certified Plant Technician Course certificate.
• Experience performing laboratory testing on hot mix asphalt and materials used to produce asphalt.
• Experience designing job mix formulas for hot mix asphalt.
