Job Overview
The main purpose of this role is to perform precise and accurate laboratory testing on various samples such as raw materials, in-process, finished products, and environmental samples to ensure the quality of all cream yeast and packaged products.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct microbiological testing, including aseptic plating, media preparation, and pathogen testing for Salmonella and Listeria.
- Perform chemical and physical analyses like moisture, protein, phosphate, starch, salt, specific gravity, Brix, sludge, and NIR.
- Test wastewater streams and biobed parameters such as TSS, COD, sludge profile, VFA, and alkalinity.
- Assess yeast appearance and sensory attributes, including odor, color, and texture.
- Prepare media and reagents required for testing.
- Collect samples from raw materials, process water, molasses, and production lines.
- Prepare and inoculate culture vessels for fermentation stages.
- Conduct quality checks on finished products and coordinate with external labs for testing.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot issues.
- Participate in proficiency testing to ensure data accuracy.
- Document and report laboratory data accurately, using manual or electronic records.
- Communicate results to relevant departments and management.
- Interpret testing results, manage nonconforming products, and prepare Certificates of Analysis.
- Apply statistical process control tools to monitor data trends.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, adhering to safety and quality standards.
- Train colleagues and learn new techniques as needed.
- Manage inventory and order laboratory supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Technical Skills
- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices and aseptic sampling principles.
- Interest or experience in lean six sigma methodologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with LIMS is a plus.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and methodical problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in microbiology and aseptic techniques.
Preferred Skills and Assets
- Understanding of ISO 17025, GMP, and HACCP standards.
- Experience with SPC tools and software like Minitab.
Personal Abilities
- Ability to develop positive relationships with colleagues inside and outside the lab.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Work in a yeast aroma environment.
- Frequently sit, talk, hear; regularly walk and stand.
- Use hands for handling objects and tools.
- Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds (23 kg).
