Description

Cathcart Rail, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is a leading freight rail services and transportation company. We employ nearly 1,000 employees in more than 100 locations across 33 states and operate the largest railcar services network in the industry, including 18 large railcar repair facilities and over 75 field services locations, along with a rail services division that runs three short line railroads and a dozen contract switching and transloading sites.

The QA Inspector performs In-Bound, In-Process & Final Inspections of Freight cars and/or Tank cars. The role ensures inspections and maintenance are conducted safely and with quality, maintaining compliance with owner, regulatory, and industry standards. The onsite QA Manager, Facility Manager, or their designee will approve and qualify the QA Inspector.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform Incoming, In-Process, and Final Inspections on Railcars, adhering to FRA, AAR, and Client specifications.
  • Collaborate with Facility Manager, QA Supervisor, or Production Supervisor on AAR requirements or QA concerns affecting work quality.
  • Make disposition decisions for non-conforming equipment, subject to verification by the QA Supervisor.
  • Follow all safety protocols, OSHA rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Complete QA M-1003 Program and Manual training within 90 days of employment.
  • Obtain certification in Company In-process, Final & In-Bound Inspection Training Matrix within up to 2 years for full QA Inspector Certification.
  • Must be qualified as Railcar Repair Technician III.
  • Be knowledgeable of AAR Repair procedures and requirements.
  • Integrate quality functions into a multi-disciplinary work environment.
  • Adhere to budgets, schedules, and performance standards set by Senior Management.
  • Perform inspections at the assigned facility and support multiple facilities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with the Quality Program standards to deliver quality products to customers.
  • Provide facility-level Quality Program and customer specification training for new and existing employees.
  • Mentor QA Inspector candidates according to the Training Matrix.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, ARS and Client specifications, and drawings.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Practical problem-solving abilities.
  • Must pass a fitness for duty examination and pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

The physical environment involves working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, in high or confined spaces. It is heavy, hands-on mechanical work requiring proper body mechanics, lifting techniques, and sometimes assistance with heavier tasks. Tools used include air and electric powered tools, hand tools, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and welding equipment upon qualification.

  • Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and visual acuity, including color and depth perception.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as required by environmental conditions.
