Job summary

Rakuten International, based in San Mateo, California, is seeking a hands-on QA Automation Engineer to join the Productivity Engineering organization. The role focuses on ensuring the quality of backend services, APIs, and data pipelines while building automation and AI-powered testing tools.

You will collaborate with developers, QA, product, and DevOps throughout the development lifecycle. The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in QA/QA Engineering, strong Java or similar language skills, expertise

Qualifications

3 to 5 years of experience in Quality Assurance or Quality Engineering, including at least 2 years of hands-on backend or API test automation.
Experience with REST API testing and backend services.
Familiarity with SQL and data integrity validation in PostgreSQL.
Experience with test frameworks (pytest, JUnit, TestNG, Spock) and CI/CD workflows.

Responsibilities

Own end-to-end quality for backend features, defining test strategies and AI-assisted validation.
Build and maintain API, integration, and end-to-end tests in Java or similar language.
Deploy and validate services in Docker/Kubernetes and integrate tests into GitHub release workflows.
Develop AI agents to exercise API workflows and validate data consistency across environments.
