Job summary

M. J. Electric, LLC in Iron Mountain, MI is seeking a Purchasing Agent who coordinates pricing for estimates and procures materials for projects within budget and schedule constraints.

You will negotiate with vendors, track costs, expedite shipments, and collaborate with estimating, project management, and accounts payable to ensure accurate, on-budget delivery. A bachelor’s degree is preferred with 3–5 years of purchasing experience in electrical utility or related fields.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of purchasing experience in electrical utility, industrial/commercial materials, or equivalent related experience.
• Strong ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Working knowledge of current purchasing practices and systems.
• Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Strong communication, organizational, presentation, and analytical skills.
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong vendor relationships.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the estimating department to develop pricing for project estimates.
• Collaborate with project management to prepare submittal documents for material and equipment approval.
• Purchase materials that meet project specifications, schedules, and budget requirements.
• Negotiate with vendors on pricing, availability, and delivery schedules.
• Track and manage actual material costs against estimated budgets.
• Expedite material shipments to keep construction schedules on track.
• Maintain and update estimating software and procurement records.
• Partner with Accounts Payable to verify invoice accuracy.
• Coordinate the return of excess or surplus materials.
