About The Role

The Publishing Director role is a key strategic role within the Springer publishing programme, with responsibility for creating strategic plans to grow and develop a global portfolio of journals, and for driving plans forward by leading, managing and nurturing a team of individuals. It is ideal for those who thrive in leadership roles and are energised in working with others to move ideas into impactful initiatives. This is a full-time role offered in either the New York or Philadelphia office. The location strategy supports the team structure and aligns with business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Build effective teams and attract top talent by creating an inclusive, high-performing environment where colleagues are engaged, supported in their development, and empowered to contribute to strategic and operational success
  • Drive vision and purpose by providing clear direction, aligning colleagues around shared objectives, and creating energy and optimism for future goals
  • Lead portfolio development and management by defining and evolving a portfolio strategy that align with organizational priorities, market opportunities, and long-term business objectives
  • Apply data analytics and quantitative skills to assess portfolio performance and translate insights into actionable and trackable plans that improve outcomes and market position
  • Drive business development by identifying, evaluating, and pursuing partnerships with societies, associations, editors, and journal owners that support portfolio growth and strategic priorities
  • Leverage conflict management skills to navigate complex stakeholder relationships, address competing priorities, and foster productive collaboration within teams and across the business
  • Partner with editors, editorial boards, societies, and the wider research community to strengthen Springer Nature's reputation as a trusted publishing partner and thought leader while expanding strategic networks and opportunities
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required, preferably in a relevant scientific, academic, business, or related field.
  • Significant experience within scientific, academic, or scholarly publishing, including leadership responsibility for people, portfolios, and business performance.
  • A track record of building, leading, and developing high-performing teams within a complex, matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrated success shaping portfolio strategies that drive growth, innovation, and long-term market impact.
  • Commercially minded with the ability to identify emerging opportunities, develop strategic partnerships, and translate market insights into sustainable business outcomes.
  • Deep understanding of the research and scholarly publishing ecosystem, including the research lifecycle and evolving industry landscape.
  • Appreciation of the needs and priorities of editors, authors, reviewers, societies, and other key stakeholders across the research community.
  • Skilled in assessing business performance through the application of financial, analytical, and quantitative insights.
  • Able to synthesize complex market, portfolio, and business data into clear strategic recommendations and actions.
  • Effective at influencing, negotiating, and building trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including exceptional written and verbal English proficiency.
  • Passion for advancing research, scientific communication, and publishing excellence.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $145,000 - $160,000.

This role is eligible for an annual performance-related bonus plan.

The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity.

The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
