Job summary

The City of Ovilla is seeking a Public Works Utility Crew Chief to supervise a crew, oversee water distribution and wastewater collection systems, and perform essential maintenance and repairs. You will lead a team, ensure safety, and coordinate with contractors as needed. The role requires 2–3 years in water/sewer maintenance, relevant certifications, and willingness to work a 8:00 a.m.

– 4:30 p.m. schedule with overtime and on-call duties.

Qualifications

• US citizenship required
• Age 18+
• High school diploma or GED or equivalent
• 2–3 years in water/sewer maintenance
• TCEQ Class C water distribution cert or higher, and Class II sewer cert or higher (or within 1 year)
• Valid Texas driver license with clean record
• Availability to work 8:00–4:30, Mon–Fri, with overtime/on-call as needed
• Ability to operate machinery and work outdoors in all weather
• Background check, physical, and drug screen required
• Ability to obtain Texas Class B CDL
• Experience with SCADA systems preferred

Responsibilities

• Supervise utility maintenance workers and repair water distribution and wastewater systems
• Inspect and repair water mains; supervise tie-ins and line work
• Lead sewer cleaning and manhole work; oversee installation and repair
• Recommend modifications to water and wastewater systems
• Maintain safe work zones and signage
• Operate and oversee equipment (trucks, backhoes, jets, etc.)
• Prepare reports and maintain work records per state rules
• Train staff in maintenance methods and equipment use
• Respond to emergency repairs and meter readings as needed
• Coordinate with outside contractors when required
