Job summary

City of Hopewell is seeking a skilled trades supervisor to plan, coordinate, and supervise street construction, maintenance, and repair work. You will prepare records, reports, and manage staff within the division, ensuring quality outcomes and timely completion.

You will oversee job tickets, procurement, and personnel issues, including on-call and emergency response. A valid Virginia license and CDL readiness within six months are required, with safety certifications to be completed within six

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with considerable experience in construction, maintenance, and supervisory work.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Class‑B driver’s license within six months of hire.
  • CPR, AED, Work zone Traffic Control, and VDOT Flagger certifications within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, review and participate in the work of staff to ensure proper completion of street and Right-of-Way projects.
  • Maintain records, tickets, logs and prepare reports for management.
  • Coordinate purchasing of materials, equipment, and supplies; manage stock and inventory.
  • Recruit, coach, and evaluate division personnel; handle time sheets and discipline as needed.
  • Schedule crew work, explain projects, manage workload, and ensure quality completion.
  • Respond to inquiries and emergencies; work with other crews as assigned.

Job description

Performs difficult skilled trades work planning, coordinating, supervising, and participating in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and Right-of-Ways, preparing and maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under limited supervision. Supervision is exercised over all personnel within the division.

  • Plans, directs, reviews and participates in the work of staff in an assigned division to ensure proper completion of work projects.
  • Maintains job tickets, completes logbooks or other records, and prepares reports for management.
  • Assists with purchasing the assigned unit’s needed materials and supplies, maintains stock and inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of division personnel; coaches, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates the work of personnel; completes personnel‑related forms such as time sheets and addresses personnel‑related issues such as time‑off and discipline.
  • Schedules and Participates in assigned crew work; explains work projects or orders to crew personnel, manages work load and completion of work to ensure quality completion.
  • Responds to inquiries, questions, or complaints.
  • Work with and assists other crews as needed or assigned
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in on‑call and emergency situations.
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in general construction, maintenance, and/or grounds keeping work including supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.
  • Obtain Commercial Class‑B driver’s license within six months of hire.
  • Obtain CPR, AED, Work zone Traffic Control, and VDOT Flagger certifications within six months of hire.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in assigned skilled or trades unit
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with type of work assigned
Skills:
  • Organization, time and materials estimate skills, team‑leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Manual skills required for assigned area of responsibility
Abilities:
  • Ability to operate hand, power or automotive equipment used in assigned unit
  • Ability to perform labor outdoors for long periods of time
Work Environment:
  • Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme noise, odors, heights, dust, fumes and hazardous materials such as petroleum products, paint, solvents, asphalt, concrete, herbicides and pesticides.
Essential Physical Activities:
  • Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
  • If job requires frequent lifting, typical weight handled: up to 75lbs
