Job summary

The City of Horseshoe Bay is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support streets, drainage, parks, and facilities. You will perform routine repairs, operate light to medium equipment, and assist with event setup and safety compliance.

Ideal candidates have 1–3 years in public works or related fields, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid Texas driver’s license. This full-time, outdoor position offers a steady schedule and exposure to varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and repair of City streets, including pothole patching and asphalt repairs.

• Operate light to medium equipment and perform manual labor.
• Assist in contractor coordination and ensure completion of assigned work.
• Uphold safety policies and PPE use; report hazards.

Function

Performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City streets, right-of-way areas, drainage systems, and park facilities. Supports daily field operations and ensures that public infrastructure is safe, functional, and well-maintained. This position serves as a key operational support role to the Public Works Director and Public Works Assistant, with a primary focus on streets and parks maintenance.

Responsibilities and Duties (Essential Functions):

Streets & Drainage

• Performs or assists contractors for routine maintenance and repair of City streets, including pothole patching, asphalt repairs, and minor roadway improvements.
• Assists with drainage maintenance, including clearing debris, maintaining culverts, and addressing minor drainage issues.
• Installs and maintains street signage, barricades, and traffic control devices.
• Assists with emergency response during storms or hazardous conditions, including road closures and debris removal.

Right-of-Way Maintenance

• Performs mowing, trimming, litter removal, and general upkeep of City rights-of-way.
• Assists in maintaining safe and clear roadways, intersections, and public access areas.
• Identifies and reports maintenance issues or safety hazards to supervisors.

Parks & Facilities

• Maintains City parks, trails, playgrounds, and related amenities.
• Performs routine maintenance such as mowing, trash collection, minor repairs, and upkeep of park facilities.
• Assists with setup and breakdown for City events or park-related activities.
• Identifies maintenance or safety concerns and reports them for corrective action.

General Operations

• Operates light and medium-duty equipment such as mowers, trucks, trailers, hand tools, and small machinery.
• Performs manual labor including lifting, digging, hauling, and equipment handling.
• Assists with contractor coordination by supporting field activities and verifying completion of assigned work.
• Maintains equipment and tools in safe working condition.
• Provides courteous and professional interaction with residents and the public.

Safety & Compliance

• Follows all City safety policies and procedures.
• Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Reports unsafe conditions, accidents, or equipment issues immediately.
• Assists in maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Texas Driver’s License
• High school diploma or GED
• One (1) to three (3) years of experience in public works, construction, landscaping, or related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Training, Education and Experience:

• Experience in streets or park maintenance
• Experience operating light equipment (mowers, skid steers, trailers, etc.)
• Basic knowledge of roadway maintenance and landscaping practices

Work Environment:

• Work is primarily outdoors with exposure to heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions
• Regular exposure to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, noise, dust, and fumes
• Noise levels are moderate to loud
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, or during emergency events
