Job summary

Town of West Springfield seeks a Motor Equipment Operator to support construction, maintenance, and operation of Public Works systems. This role requires operating heavy equipment, snow removal duties, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Candidates should have a high school diploma and 2–4 years of relevant experience with heavy automotive equipment. A valid Massachusetts Class B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of safe operation practices for public works equipment.
• Ability to read and follow safety regulations and manuals.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance and inspections.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy and specialized construction or maintenance equipment, including high-capacity trucks with CDL.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies and supports system failure incidents.
• Performs installation and repair of public works utilities using needed methods and tools.
• Operates heavy equipment for snow removal.
• Reads and follows engineering blueprints and diagrams for water and sewer systems.
• Locates and maintains underground utilities and controls for public works infrastructure.
• Performs routine maintenance like checking air pressures and lubrication.
• Performs tasks typically assigned to laborers or skilled laborers.
• Conducts daily vehicle condition inspections as required by law and policy.
