Job summary

City of Suffolk is seeking an experienced para professional engineering/GIS specialist to perform advanced GIS and drafting tasks within the Public Works Department. The role requires initiative, the ability to work independently, and frequent interaction with developers, contractors, and the public.

Responsibilities include maintaining records, supporting engineering plans, reviewing stormwater features, and assisting in field inspections and data collection with GPS and GIS tools.

Qualifications

• Two-year college degree in civil engineering or related field and 3–5 years of experience in civil engineering, water/sewer utilities, surveying, or related field.
• Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

• Perform GIS related activities and drafting work for Public Works and other City departments.
• Investigate complaints from the general public regarding departmental services or programs.
• Assist the public and consultants with locating file information and maps.
• Maintain department filing system and records for private site and engineering plans.
• Assist in obtaining information regarding water, sewer, stormwater and roadway facilities within the City of Suffolk.
• Maintain log of department fixed assets and handle as-built records.
• Review plans for stormwater features and impervious surface inventory.
• Support public presentations to City Council and community organizations.
• May review plats and easements; field inspect stormwater infrastructure.
• Locate stormwater features and verify as-builts using GPS; post data as needed.
• Assist with erosion and sediment control inspections.
• Answer questions from Engineers, Planners, and Developers regarding policy and facilities.
• Perform other related duties as required.
