Job summary

City of Smyrna, GA seeks a Deputy Director of Public Works to assist in planning, directing, and managing the operations of the Public Works and Engineering Department, ensuring compliance with regulations and efficient delivery of infrastructure.

This leadership role oversees streets, water and sewer, sanitation, facilities, and fleet maintenance; participates in budgeting, capital improvements, project reviews, safety programs, and staff supervision.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field is required.
• More than five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and training.
• Ability to obtain a valid Georgia CDL for the vehicle type operated.
• Possession of or ability to obtain Georgia CPWM certification.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a Water Distribution and Wastewater Collections license.
• Must pass criminal background, credit, and motor vehicle checks.
• Must pass post-offer DOT drug screening and physical.

Responsibilities

• Direct day-to-day operations of Public Works and Engineering Departments.
• Assist in developing and implementing the department budget and capital improvement plans.
• Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for the department.
• Prepare cost estimates for Public Works projects and assist in bid and contract processes.
• Review and approve project plans for streets, water/sewer, drainage, and utilities.
• Coordinate and oversee municipal paving projects ensuring quality and compliance.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate department staff per city policies.
• Plan and direct LMIG projects including paving and utility improvements.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and oversee PPE use; conduct safety training.
