Job summary

City of Hampton is seeking an Equipment Operator II to support the Public Works team in maintaining and improving local infrastructure. You will operate heavy-duty equipment and motorized vehicles to assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of storm drains and roadways.

Under supervision, you will repair and replace storm water pipes, haul materials, maintain rights-of-way, and perform ditch maintenance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One year of full-time-equivalent equipment operation or related experience required.
• This position is safety sensitive and subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy-duty equipment and motorized vehicles to support construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities and infrastructure.

Join our Public Works team as an Equipment Operator II and play a vital role in maintaining and improving the City’s infrastructure! In this position, you’ll operate specialized, heavy-duty equipment and a variety of motorized vehicles to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities and infrastructure. Working under close supervision and established procedures, you’ll be expected to repair and replace storm water pipes, clean out half pipe, haul construction material, maintain right of ways, and conduct heavy ditch maintenance and repair.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
• One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in equipment operation or closely related experience.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or a valid driver’s license and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class B within 180 days of employment.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• The incumbent may be considered \"essential personnel\" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
