Job summary

City of Hampton is seeking an Equipment Operator II to support Public Works projects, operating heavy equipment and a variety of motorized vehicles.

This role involves repairing storm water pipes, hauling materials, and maintaining rights‑of‑way, under close supervision and established procedures. The incumbent may be designated essential personnel during emergencies and may work long hours as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• One year of full-time equipment operation or related experience.
• Safety sensitive role with drug/alcohol testing per city policy.
• Must possess a valid Virginia CDL Class B or obtain it within 180 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy-duty equipment and motorized vehicles to support construction, maintenance, and repair.
• Repair and replace storm water pipes and perform heavy ditch maintenance.
• Haul construction materials and maintain right-of-ways.
• Perform routine maintenance and support facility infrastructure projects.
• Work under supervision following established procedures and safety guidelines.

Join our Public Works team as an Equipment Operator II and play a vital role in maintaining and improving the City’s infrastructure! In this position, you’ll operate specialized, heavy-duty equipment and a variety of motorized vehicles to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities and infrastructure. Working under close supervision and established procedures, you’ll be expected to repair and replace storm water pipes, clean out half pipe, haul construction material, maintain right of ways, and conduct heavy ditch maintenance and repair.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
• One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in equipment operation or closely related experience.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or a valid driver’s license and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class B within 180 days of employment.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
