Job summary

The City of Hampton is seeking an Equipment Operator III to operate specialized heavy-duty equipment for drainage maintenance and public works projects. You will repair and replace storm water pipes, haul materials, and perform heavy ditch maintenance as part of maintaining the city’s infrastructure.

Role requires a high school diploma or GED, 2 years of related equipment operation experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a Virginia CDL Class A within 180 days.

Qualifications

As an Equipment Operator III in Drainage Maintenance you will operate one or more types of specialized, complex heavy-duty motorized and automotive equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s public works infrastructure. You will be expected to repair and replace storm water pipes, clean out half pipe, haul construction material, maintain right of ways, and conduct heavy ditch maintenance and repair. Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
• Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in equipment operation or closely related experience.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or a valid driver’s license and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class A within 180 days of employment.
• Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
