Job summary

The City of Everett is seeking a Public Works Dispatcher to provide routine and emergent dispatching in the Public Works Department. You will maintain uninterrupted communication with field personnel, serve as the primary contact for the public, and route issues to the correct work group.

Responsibilities include updating logs, maintaining contact lists, monitoring utility service interruptions, and conveying important information about road closures and weather events.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus at least two years in communication, scheduling, or dispatch duties.
  • Public works experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with the public and field personnel.

About the Job:

This is responsible work providing routine and emergent dispatching services in the Public Works Department. Employees in this classification are responsible for maintaining uninterrupted communication and dispatching services on an ongoing basis at various locations in the Public Works Department. The work involves responsibility for establishing contact with field personnel, serving as the primary contact for the general public, documenting reported complaints and routing to the appropriate work group.

Additional duties include general office and warehouse support work, such as maintaining logs, updating contact lists, and ensuring timely updates on utility service interruptions, adverse traffic events, construction-related closures and weather phenomena. The work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and on the basis of service, results achieved, and other established performance evaluation criteria.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency AND
  • At least two (2) years of professional experience in communication, scheduling, or dispatch-related duties. Experience in the public works environment is preferred OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which clearly demonstrates knowledge of public works infrastructure.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of, a valid, unrestricted (corrective lenses allowed) driver license at the date of hire; and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hire.
EXAMINATION STEPS
  • There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
  • Responses to the supplemental questionnaire and the resume will be reviewed together to generate a single combined score, which will be blind-rated and weighted at 10%.
  • Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 90%) tentatively scheduled for 9/16.
  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
  • Extensive background checks will be conducted.
  • New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
  • This job classification is represented by the AFSCME Union.
