Qualifications

Position Overview

The Communications Department keeps residents informed while promoting City programs, services, events, and initiatives through strategic communications, multimedia storytelling, and community engagement.

Multimedia Communications & Events Specialist

The Multimedia Communications & Events Specialist supports the City’s communications and community engagement efforts through multimedia storytelling, event planning, and public outreach. This is a dual-function position responsible for both the City’s multimedia communications and the planning and execution of City-sponsored events and community engagement initiatives.

Reporting to the Director of Communications and working closely with City departments, this position captures the day-to-day work of local government through photography, videography, writing, and digital media while assisting with the planning and execution of community events, public meetings, and special initiatives.

This is a highly visible, hands‑on position for a creative and organized professional who enjoys both storytelling and event production. The successful candidate will move between the office and the community, creating multimedia content one day and coordinating a public event the next.

The position requires strong project management skills, creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with City departments, residents, vendors, community organizations, and elected officials.

Duties & Responsibilities
Multimedia Communications
  • Create engaging multimedia content promoting City programs, services, initiatives, and community events.
  • Capture, edit, and produce professional‑quality photography, video, and graphics for social media, the City website, newsletters, ECTV, and other communication platforms.
  • Write press releases, news stories, social media content, newsletters, and other public information materials.
  • Maintain and update website content to ensure information is accurate, timely, and accessible.
  • Assist in managing the City’s social media platforms by creating content, monitoring engagement, and responding to inquiries when appropriate.
  • Track digital engagement metrics and recommend improvements to communications strategies.
Event Planning & Community Engagement
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute City-sponsored events, ceremonies, festivals, press conferences, and public outreach initiatives.
  • Coordinate event logistics, including timelines, vendors, equipment, signage, promotional materials, volunteers, and on‑site operations.
  • Collaborate with City departments, public safety agencies, community organizations, and vendors to ensure successful events.
  • Attend City meetings, public hearings, and community events to provide communications support and capture multimedia content.
  • Assist with developing and monitoring event budgets, obtaining quotes, coordinating vendor contracts and invoices, and ensuring expenditures comply with City policies and procedures.
Collaboration
  • Work closely with City departments to identify stories, promote programs, and ensure consistent messaging across communication platforms.
  • Support Everett Community Television (ECTV) programming and multimedia projects as needed.
  • Assist with media relations by coordinating interviews, press materials, and media requests.
  • Assist with emergency communications and other time‑sensitive public information efforts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Event Management, Graphic Design, Media Production, or a related field and at least three (3) years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, event planning, multimedia production, or similar relevant work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Municipal or government communications experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience planning and coordinating large public events is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute community events ranging from small public meetings to large events serving up to 5,000 attendees.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  • Experience creating engaging content for social media, websites, newsletters, and other digital platforms.
  • Strong photography, videography, and digital storytelling skills.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Canva, or similar creative software.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with City departments, vendors, community organizations, elected officials, and residents.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, remain adaptable, and thrive in a fast‑paced, event‑driven environment.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems, social media management platforms, and digital analytics tools.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole, is preferred.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required to support City meetings, events, and emergency communications.
  • Flexibility to adjust work hours based on planned or unforeseen events.

  • Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of movement. Work will require some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain.
  • Position requires access to a car in good working condition or otherwise be able to travel independently and efficiently between City work sites with equipment weighing up to 20lbs.
  • Job duties require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a personal computer and/or standard office equipment, typing and/or word processing, filing, sorting of papers.
