Job summary

The City of Wichita invites students to join as an Engineering Aide 2 (Intern) for a limited full-time summer term, gaining hands-on experience in public works, utilities, and civil design under licensed engineers.

Work includes traffic safety investigations, bridge repair analysis, pavement preservation planning, and water main design updates using AutoCAD; students apply classroom lessons in real projects and build professional skills.

Qualifications

• Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications."
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Performs intern-level work assigned by the department.
• Conduct on-site traffic investigations of traffic sight distances and safety concerns.
• Investigations lead to work directives for traffic sign installations, clearing site obstructions, pavement markings and signal modifications.
• Perform analysis of bridge inspections, initiating small projects for bridge repairs with review and approval of work by a Professional Engineer.
• AutoCAD work may include updating plan details and design of neighborhood water main replacements.
• Plan, estimate, and prepare projects under the Pavement Preservation program.
