Job summary

The City of Wichita is offering a limited full-time summer intern position in Engineering Aide 2 (Intern). You will work Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm, with direct guidance from licensed Professional Engineers on public works projects.

Responsibilities include traffic investigations, bridge analysis, and AutoCAD updates for water main design. You must be enrolled in an Engineering-related program and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, with a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Engineering, Construction Science or Construction Management.
• Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
• Six months of experience preparing written reports and presenting information verbally.

Responsibilities

• Perform intern-level work assigned by the department.
• Conduct on-site traffic investigations and safety analyses for traffic signs, obstructions, pavement markings and signals.
• Analyze bridge inspections and initiate small bridge repair projects with PE review.
• Update plan details and water main designs using AutoCAD.
• Plan and assist with pavement preservation projects under the $12 million annual program, reviewed by a Professional Engineer.
• Operate a vehicle to complete assignments as needed.

Join the City of Wichita this summer as anEngineering Aide 2 (Intern) and play an active role in shaping the city's infrastructure. This limited full-time summer position offers hands-on experience in public works, utilities, and civil engineering projects while working directly with licensed Professional Engineers. Interns contribute to meaningful projects such as traffic safety investigations, bridge repair analysis, pavement preservation planning, and water main design updates using AutoCAD. This role provides an excellent opportunity for students to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting, build professional skills, and make a direct impact on Wichita's neighborhoods. Work is structured to align with the intern's academic background and reviewed by a Professional Engineer, ensuring both valuable experience and professional growth.

• Performs intern-level work assigned by the department.
• Conduct on-site traffic investigations of traffic sight distances and safety concerns. Investigations will lead to work directives for traffic sign installations, clearing site obstructions, pavement markings and signal modifications.
• Perform analysis of bridge inspections, initiating small projects for bridge repairs with review and approval of work to be performed by a Professional Engineer.
• AutoCAD work may include updating plan details and design of neighborhood water main replacements
• Plan, estimate, and prepare projects under the $12 million annual Pavement Preservation program. Final project review and approval to be performed by a Professional Engineer
• Completion of work assignments may require operation of a vehicle.

• Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, construction and windy conditions
• Ability to cover uneven terrain, go up and down stairs, and otherwise maneuver around construction sites

• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements for the specific internship assignment

Required Experience and Training

• Candidate must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or program in Engineering, Construction Science or Construction Management.
• A current cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
• Six (6) months of experience preparing written reports and presenting information verbally in a classroom, work, or internship setting.
• Candidate must maintain a valid driver's license.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

• Candidate currently enrolled in an undergraduate or program in Civil Engineering.
• One (1) semester of experience with AutoCAD.
• Sophomore or higher academic standing during the 2027 summer term.
