Job summary

The City of Oak Park is seeking a Public Service Worker Assistant to perform a variety of manual labor tasks within the Department of Public Works, including water and sewer, parks and forestry, street maintenance and repair. This part-time position requires dependability and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

The role reports to the DPW Foreman or Public Service Worker and involves operating power tools, snow/ice control, tree work, and maintaining utilities and streets.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid unrestricted Michigan drivers license.
• Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures.
• Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, grease, fuel, chemicals and lubricants.
• Ability to stoop, bend, climb trees, go into underground vaults and pits with restricted movement.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Knowledge of use of equipment and tools used in Public Works practices.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of power tools and equipment including mowers, blowers, chainsaws, chippers, trimmers, etc.
• Perform ice and snow control activities such as shoveling and salting.
• Prune and remove trees and maintain parks and landscaping.
• Repair and maintain underground sewers, lift stations and appurtenances.
• Maintain streets and sidewalks including concrete and asphalt removal and replacement, street signs and markings.
• Keep accurate work records, time sheets and other forms of data.
• Be on call for emergency response during snow events.

Summary of Function

Performs a variety of tasks such as, but not limited to, manual labor in functions of water & sewer, parks & forestry, street maintenance and repair. Employees in this position may be assigned to any division of the Department of Public Works. Employees in this position are subject to the Federal Drug and Alcohol testing act requirements.

Reports To

DPW Foreman but may receive direction from a Public Service Worker

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

• Operation of a variety of power tools, including mowers, blowers, chainsaws, chippers, trimmers, etc.
• Operation of non-CDL commercial equipment
• Perform ice and snow control activities, including shoveling and salting
• Perform tree pruning and tree removal
• Repair, installation and maintenance of underground sewers, lift stations and their appurtenances
• Lawn and landscape maintenance including cutting and edging grass, planting, watering and care for trees shrubs and flowers
• Performs repair and maintenance of pump stations, water meters, hydrants, and curb stop boxes
• Repair and maintain streets and sidewalks including concrete and asphalt removal and replacement, street signs and markings
• Maintains accurate work records, time sheets and other forms of data
• Required to be on call for emergency call back, such as during snow emergencies

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license

This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $19.3968- $22.0029 per hour.
