Job summary

The City of Oak Park's Department of Public Works is seeking a Public Service Worker Assistant for a part-time, hourly role. You will perform manual labor across water, sewer, parks, streets, and maintenance tasks, with flexibility to rotate to divisions as needed.

Candidates must have a valid Michigan driver's license, be able to lift 50 pounds, and work outdoors in all temperatures; on-call during snow emergencies is required. Work is on-site at Oak Park facilities.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operate power tools and equipment (mowers, blowers, chainsaws, etc.).
• Perform ice/snow control, pruning, and street/sidewalk maintenance.
• Repair and maintain sewers, lift stations, meters and hydrants.
• Lawn and landscape maintenance including planting and watering.
• Maintain records and be on-call for emergencies.

JOB TITLE:

Public Service Worker Assistant – Part-Time

Hourly, FLSA Non-Exempt – TPOAM Bargaining Unit Part-Time Position

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:

Department of Public Works

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

Performs a variety of tasks such as, but not limited to, manual labor in functions of water & sewer, parks & forestry, street maintenance and repair. Employees in this position may be assigned to any division of the Department of Public Works. Employees in this position are subject to the Federal Drug and Alcohol testing act requirements.

REPORTS TO:

DPW Foreman but may receive direction from a Public Service Worker

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Operation of a variety of power tools, including mowers, blowers, chainsaws, chippers, trimmers, etc.
• Operation of non-CDL commercial equipment
• Perform ice and snow control activities, including shoveling and salting
• Perform tree pruning and tree removal
• Repair, installation and maintenance of underground sewers, lift stations and their appurtenances
• Lawn and landscape maintenance including cutting and edging grass, planting, watering and care for trees shrubs and flowers
• Performs repair and maintenance of pump stations, water meters, hydrants, and curb stop boxes
• Repair and maintain streets and sidewalks including concrete and asphalt removal and replacement, street signs and markings
• Maintains accurate work records, time sheets and other forms of data
• Required to be on call for emergency call back, such as during snow emergencies

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license
• Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pound loads
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures
• Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, grease, fuel, chemicals and lubricants
• Ability to stoop, bend, climb trees, go into underground vaults and pits with restricted movement.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
• Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions
• Knowledge of use of equipment and tools used in Public Works practices

This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $19.3968- $22.0029 per hour.
