Job summary

The Town of Payson is seeking a Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee to work through a structured on-the-job training program. Responsibilities include answering 911 calls, evaluating situations, and initiating police or fire responses using voice and computer dispatch systems.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, basic office skills, and familiarity with Microsoft Word and multi-line phones; prior clerical or public interaction experience is valued.

Qualifications

  • Graduated from high school/GED, supplemented by training in modern office procedures and computer equipment.
  • Experience with word processing software such as Microsoft Word, multit-line telephone systems, and transcription skills.
  • Experience in general clerical/office duties (filing, copying, telephone, typing) and working with the public.
  • Some experience operating radio or computer equipment is highly desirable or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Answering 911 calls and dispatching police or fire services.
  • Evaluate calls for proper action and initiate response by obtaining information for dispatch.
  • Dispatch messages by voice and computer to field units and maintain radio contact with mobile units.

Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee
Compensation

The starting rateis dependent on qualifications and experience.

Pay Range:$24.27 - $36.41 per hour

The Town of Payson offers a generous benefits package including participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, 188 hours of paid time off per year (sick and vacation) with accruals increasing with years of service and nine paid holidays and an additional 40 hours of floating holiday hours.

The Position

The Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee performs the full scope of duties of a Public Safety Telecommunicator through a structured on the job training program tailored to each individual's experience or lack of in the areas of answering 911 calls, dispatching fire and emergency medical services, or dispatching police services. Incumbents are trained according to Payson Police or Fire Department policies and operating procedures. Duties include: receiving calls from the public; evaluating the calls for proper action; and initiating Police or Fire response by obtaining information required for dispatching field units. An employee in this class learns to dispatch messages and calls by voice and computer to police or fire units and to maintain radio contact with mobile units.

The Ideal Candidate

The Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee will have graduated from high school/GED, supplemented by training in modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment. Will have experience with word processing software such as Microsoft Word, multi-line telephone systems, and transcription skills. Will have experience in general clerical/office duties such as filing, copying, telephone, typing or keyboard. Will have experience working with the public. Will have some experience operating a radio, computer equipment, or other communication equipment is highly desirable. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities for the position.
