Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri. Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions. Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.

Job Summary

The Department of Public Safety is in search of full-time Campus Public Safety Officers.

Duties

  • Enforce campus regulations, federal, state, and city statutes
  • Protect the University’s property and persons
  • Controlling campus traffic
  • Provide security escort service
  • Conduct emergency evacuation of the campus, if necessary

Qualifications

  • Read, understand and clearly speak English; constantly use speech and hearing (correctable to normal level required) in communicating with public/co-workers, giving and receiving instructions, using phones
  • Must be able to frequently prepare written reports and logs in neat, legible handwriting; may require computer skills
  • Experience with traffic control preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Follow detailed oral and written instructions
  • Excellent human relations skills
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality standard;
  • Neat and professional appearance
  • Provide quality customer service
  • Handle both common and crisis situations at the client site, calmly and efficiently
  • May be required to use protective devices such as pepper spray or baton

Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED, be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and currently must be licensed to carry a firearm through the Watchman’s Division, St. Louis County Private Security Section. An earned Associate's Degree or equivalent earned credit hours from an accredited institution preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • May be subjected to adverse working conditions or physical conditions including possible injury in the apprehension of violators of codes
  • Occasionally lift at least 50 pounds
  • May be required to use protective devices such as steel-toed shoes, handguns, tear gas, and/or baton.
  • May be required to work irregular hours
  • Stand or walk constantly (for up to an entire shift) on various surfaces (tile, concrete, carpet)
  • Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift
  • Occasionally bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties
  • Run as needed
  • Constant use of arms, hands, and fingers while using phone, notepad, writing reports, and other administrative tasks
  • Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public and co-workers, view security monitors; includes hand/eye coordination
  • Work in various environments including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain, or heat;
  • Constant mental alertness and attention to detail required while setting priorities and following up on assignments
  • Must be able to stay alert and awake at all times
