The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of public safety experience, HS diploma or GED, and a valid driver’s license with CPR/First-Aid training. Experience serving homeless or underserved populations is preferred; compensation is hourly

Responsibilities

  • Ensure SOME Inc. facilities are safe and clients, guests, and residents are in a secure environment.
  • Provide conflict mitigation and de-escalation using CPI/ Handle with Care or related training.
  • Develop and file incident reports/SIR for medical, police, and special circumstances.
  • Contact police when conflict escalates or violence is exhibited.
  • Monitor security cameras and building perimeters; maintain daily security logs.
  • Enforce rules consistently for all clients, guests, and residents.

Job description

SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in Washington, DC, helping them break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them.

Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare, and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

Position Description

The Public Safety Officer provides public safety assistance and operational support across SOME, Inc. facilities. This position helps maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for employees, clients, residents, visitors, and other stakeholders by monitoring assigned areas, responding to safety concerns and incidents, supporting established security procedures, and assisting with day-to-day facility operations as needed.

Compensation

We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $19.87 to $21.00 and may be commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Wednesday - Sunday, 6:30 am - 3:00 pm (40 hours per week)

Required Qualifications

HS Diploma or GED; 3-5yrs. Public Safety experience; experience providing services to the homeless and/or underserved populations

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree; 3-5 yrs. Public Safety experience; experience providing services to the homeless and/or underserved populations

Required License/Certification

Must have a vehicle & valid Driver's License; CPR/First-Aid

Expected Contributions: Public Safety Management
  • Ensure SOME Inc. facilities are safe and clients, guests, and residents are in a secure, safe environment. Provide security details inside and outside of locations.
  • Provide conflict mitigation and de-escalation for conflicts between clients, guests, residents, and/or staff with the use CPI/ Handle with Care or related de-escalation training.
  • Develop and file incident reports/ SIR for medical, police, and special circumstances.
  • Contact police when conflict escalates, or violent behavior is exhibited by client, guest, or residents.
  • Develop positive working relationships with the police
  • Monitor security cameras and the perimeter of the buildings
  • Maintain daily security log
  • Enforce rules consistently for all clients, guests, and residents
Operational Support
  • Provide assistance when needed to Emergency Services
  • Notify facilities immediately when a situation arises requiring immediate attention
  • Make rounds at assigned facilities, document and report incidents, and provide a safe and secure presence.

Reports To: Public Safety Officer- Senior Team Lead
Physical Demands

The Public Safety Officer must be able to stand, walk, and remain mobile for extended periods while monitoring assigned facilities and responding to incidents. The position may also require prolonged periods of sitting and frequent use of a computer or security-monitoring equipment. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds. The role may require bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and moving quickly in response to safety or emergencies. Must also be able to travel to offsite meetings, trainings, events, or other SOME locations as needed.
