Job summary

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM is seeking a telecommunicator and records technician for the Department of Public Safety. You will operate telecommunications equipment, manage records, and support emergency communications during events and incidents.

The role requires attention to accuracy, discretion, and excellent customer service, with occasional overtime and weekend commitments; prior data entry, records, or dispatch experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have one (1) year of experience related to data entry, records management, and/or telecommunications (dispatcher)
• Must successfully complete an in-depth pre-employment screening and background investigation

Responsibilities

• Serves as a direct report to the Public Safety Support Specialist
• Operation and maintenance of telephones, radios, computers, and communications equipment
• Operation of several records management systems through multi-faceted and systematic processes
• Provides digital fingerprinting services
• Interprets, explains, and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, safety practices, policies, and procedures
• Work special events on an as-needed basis
• Classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) with mandatory reporting requirements as outlined in the Clery Act
• Maintain active, working knowledge of departmental rules, policies, procedures, and developments in the law that apply to the position
• Keep the Public Safety Support Specialist promptly briefed on policy matters, potential liability issues, and issues that could both negatively or positively impact the department or educational institution
• Adhere to all lawful directives received from the Public Safety Support Specialist or Chief of Police
• Analyze complex public safety problems and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action
• Assure visitors are greeted and directed, and when appropriate, resolve routine problems and answer inquiries
• Monitor the acceptance, screening, and routing of telephone calls, and maintain a log of records of calls as required
• Handle the public courteously and professionally to establish and maintain satisfactory public relations
• Ensure proper handling and storage of confidential and/or sensitive records
• Regular and predictable attendance is required
• Perform other duties as assigned
