Job summary

Emory Healthcare is seeking a Public Safety Dispatcher to receive, evaluate, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for police and public safety officers. The role requires strong communication, typing, and technical skills to operate complex telecommunications, alarms, and computer systems.

The position involves monitoring multiple lines, alarm boxes, and CCTV, staying calm during critical incidents, and may include Public Safety Officer duties when assigned.

Qualifications

  • Two years of customer service/telecommunications, military, law enforcement or security experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training beyond high school.
  • APCO or IAHSS certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answer, evaluate, prioritize, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for Police and Public Safety Officers.
  • Monitor and process calls from multiple lines and alarms.
  • Monitor complex security systems including alarms, access control, and CCTV; remain calm in incidents.
  • May perform Public Safety Officer duties when assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Job Summary:

The Public Safety Dispatcher displays analytical and organizational skills necessary to receive, evaluate, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance. Utilizes effective communication through verbal and typing skills to maintain efficient operations and respond to police and security situations. Exhibits technological competency to utilize complex telecommunications, alarms, and computer systems.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Emergency and Non-Emergency Dispatch Answer, evaluate, prioritize, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance to Police and Public Safety Officers

  • Communications Monitoring Monitor and process calls from large number of incoming telephone lines, intercom lines, emergency call boxes and alarms

  • Security Systems Monitoring and Emergency Response Monitor complex system of alarms, computerized access control, and CCTV Must remain calm and focused during life and death incidents to ensure Police, Security, and Medical response is appropriate and complete

  • Public Safety Support May perform Public Safety Officer duties when assigned

  • Performs other related duties as required

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Experience - Two (2) years of customer service/telecommunications, military, law enforcement or security experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education - A high school diploma or equivalent. Additional training beyond high school

  • Certification - APCO, IAHSS or related certification

Physical Requirements:

Medium Max 25 lbs.: Up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); lifting 25 lbs. max; carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; occasional to frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting; close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Factors affecting environmental conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation, shift work, and travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
