Job summary

City of Detroit's General Services Department - Detroit Animal Care & Control Division is hiring an Animal Control Officer to promote public safety, enforce ordinances, and provide a range of animal care services in Detroit. You will patrol, investigate, capture animals, and prepare case documentation.

The role requires high school diploma or GED, one year animal care experience, and specialized certifications.

Qualifications

• High School graduation or G.E.D.
• One year experience in caring for animals.
• Animal Control Officer certification by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 100 training hours, or willingness to obtain within six months of hire.
• Certification by a Michigan State Licensed Veterinarian to perform euthanasia by injection, or willingness to obtain within one year of hire.
• Emergency Preparedness training (FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and related) and HIPAA certification within 30 days of hire.
• Valid Michigan Driver License.

Responsibilities

• Enforce local animal care and control laws and respond to calls.
• Capture and handle animals, assess needs, and arrange disposition.
• Prepare records and testimony for court with evidence collection.
• Provide public information on licensing, vaccinations, and adoptions.
• Maintain safety and cleanliness of kennels and facilities.
