Job summary

Florence County Sheriff’s Office seeks an Animal Control Deputy to lead animal, litter, and rabies control programs across Florence County. The role involves patrol, investigations, reporting, and court testimony.

The position requires 21+ years old, SC driver’s license, high school diploma, Class III Advanced certification within 1 year, and strong communication and collaboration skills with diverse groups.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license at time of hire.
• Requires a high school diploma.
• Must complete Class III Advanced certification within 1 year of hire.
• Must pass extensive background investigation including polygraph.
• Read and comprehend police-related technical and legal information.
• Document incidents accurately using standard forms and computer software.
• Communicate effectively using English (spoken) and non-verbal methods.
• Excellent interpersonal, analytical, research, presentation, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work with diverse groups including inmates, agencies, and the community.
• Skilled in patrol vehicle operation and firearms handling.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of laws, ordinances, standards related to the duties.

Responsibilities

• Patrol Florence County areas by car, foot, and other means to enforce laws and preserve public safety.
• Respond to service calls from dispatch and other sources.
• Investigate complaints and issue tickets/citations.
• Set and monitor traps for stray animals; ensure timely checks.
• Assist in animal cruelty investigations.
• Notify DHEC of bites; quarantine animals as required.
• Respond to litter complaints and manage litter removal programs.
• Prepare reports and case information; testify in court when required.
• Renders First Aid and CPR as needed.
• Attend and participate in training to improve law enforcement skills.
• Maintain physical fitness and respond to stressful situations.
• Maintain knowledge of applicable laws and ordinances.
